Gears and cluster details, gearbox

Here you learn how to recognise the gears and cluster from the different types of gearboxes used in the Lambretta scooters.
Unlike the older models using a 3-speed model, all LI series (starting 1958) have a 4-speed gearbox.

First Gear

First gear on the Lambretta Li range gearbox is always obvious in a pile of gears as it has the teeth on its side face that engage with the kick-start mechanism. All we need now is to identify which gearbox it belongs to.

Second Gear

Second gear can be recognised by it having the internal dog nearly flush on one face and a high boss on its other face. This fact is especially important as second gear on a TV200 could be confused with third gear from another gearbox. All we need now is to identify which gearbox it belongs to.

Third gear can be recognised by it having the internal dog more or less central and a lower boss than second.

39 tooth third gear note:
It is important to be careful with this third gear, as there are 2 different types and these can only be separated by measuring over 5 teeth, early types will be 33.0 mm and later ones 33.8mm. These mesh with a different profile cluster to match so it is VERY important that you get this right.

Fourth Gear

Fourth gear is another one that is easy to identify, it has the dogs flush on one face and no oil grooves on the other face. All we need now is to identify which gearbox it belongs to.

no loose gears, only the clusterHopefully you won’t have a problem identifying this. It is very straightforward to identify what gearbox this cluster belongs to, simply count the teeth.
